The Wilkes-Barre VAMC optometry residency program places an emphasis on the management of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and other eye conditions in patients with complex medical and ocular histories. Advanced ophthalmic procedures, including gonioscopy, peripheral retina evaluation with fundus contact lens, digital photography, and optical coherence tomography will be highlighted.
Residents will order appropriate lab work, imaging studies, and other procedures when indicated, and they will be able to follow their own patients. They will primarily perform direct care examinations, although there will be some opportunity to precept fourth and third year externs.
The resident will rotate through specialty clinics at WB VAMC including retina, as well as neuro-eye clinic at The Eye Institute at the
Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Additionally, non-optometric rotations through clinics within the WB VAMC will be scheduled.
The resident will give one clinical case presentation at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University at the end of their residency year. Residents will also prepare a manuscript of publishable quality.
The resident will increase their optometric knowledge base. The resident will complete a self-study program using the 12 volume Basic Clinical Science Course published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The resident will also be encouraged to attend local continuing education conferences, as well as virtual attendance of grand round conferences taking place at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry via WebEx technology.
